Klipsch Image X5 headphones are slightly bigger, slightly cheaper

Klipsch Image X5

Klipsch made tiny waves with their original Image headphones, saying they were the world’s smallest. We took their word for it and moved along. Now Klipsch has given up on the size game with its new X5 headphones, boasting that the 2mm-bigger X5 headphones are “light but heavy in sound.” Anyway, the Image X5 use a full-range armature driver, tuned bass-reflex system, and sport a long-enough 50-inch cable. The housing is electroplated aluminum and Klipsch says the black “tail” reduces cable stress and dampens cable noise. The X5 is iPhone compatible and comes in at a more wallet-friendly (but still slightly alarming) $249 later this month. For that price you’ll get the headphones, carrying pouch, airplane adapter, five multi-sized ear gels, and an ear gel cleaning tool.

Video: iPhone + LEGO robot = superfluous genius

Filed under:

It’s not always a question of why – sometimes why not will suffice. The rolling bot above relies upon the Mindstorms NXT light sensor’s ability to read the contrasting colors on the iPhone display. After some simple programming and DIY tomfoolery you can drive the robot from the comforts of your WiFi-enabled web browser. Overkill? Oh hells yeah, but at least now your iPhone will serve a purpose after Monday. See how the kids at Battlebricks did it in the video after the break.

Softbank to sell (UMTS 3G) iPhone in Japan

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/BREAKING_Softbank_to_sell_iPhone_in_Japan’; Japan’s third-largest mobile phone operator now has rights to Apple’s iPhone. As has been the norm recently, the announcement is a one-liner without any details related to exclusivity (NTT DoCoMo and KDDI still can has a chanceburger) or model… though it should be noted that Softbank is a W-CDMA (UMTS 3G), not GSM/EDGE carrier. Softbank only says that they’ll be selling the iPhone “later this year.”

Movistar nabs iPhone in Spain

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Movistar_Nabs_iPhone_in_Spain’; Apple’s relentless quest to spread the iPhone to every corner of the universe has officially nabbed yet another carrier. Movistar has been announced as an official partner for Spain, though no clues have been given about the launch date — a common trend with the iPhone carrier partnership press releases as of late, we’ve noticed — and the best that interested parties can do right now is sign up to be notified when more information becomes available. Any suckers out there want to bet us that they’ll be launching the EDGE model? No?

Prototype iControlPad proves itself on video

Filed under:

Hah, did you really have the nerve to doubt CraigIX? The iPhone gamepad add-on that we heard about just last week is already inching closer to reality, and there’s a video to prove it. In the somewhat unexciting clip posted up after the jump, you’ll see a PCB mockup of the device doing its thang, though it’s quite inelegant in its current form. If you just needed one more something to boost your interest / confidence that this critter was real, you know where to head.

Hutchison / 3 snags iPhone for Hong Kong and Macau

Filed under:

It’s being reported that Hutchison (aka 3) snagged the iPhone for distribution in Hong Kong and Macau, which could come as early as next quarter according to the South China Morning Post. Like the rest, this was supposedly another one liner un-announcement with no real info, but you probably wouldn’t want to anger Steve before WWDC. Besides, in Hong Kong 3 doesn’t sell anything but 3G phones — so put that in your iPipe and smoke it.

[Thanks, Chris]

StyleTap’s Palm OS emulator officially coming to iPhone and iPod touch

In a move of unsurprising proportions, StyleTap announced today that it will be bringing its Palm OS emulator to the iPhone and iPod touch… officially. This basically means that every one of those precious Palm apps you couldn’t live without will now be easily accessible via Apple’s devices, thus seriously threatening the argument for keeping your Treo 600. Gregory Sokoloff, CEO of the company, said that the response to a video posted in February of a demo version of the software convinced them to take the plunge. Palm, now might be a good time to stun us with your new OS.

TurboGrafx-16 emulation hits the iPhone

Finally, the ultimate dream of all iPhone owners has come to pass: TurboGrafx-16 emulation. Thanks once again to the massive talents at ZodTTD, Apple’s phone has gotten another piece of the emulator puzzle in the form of Temper4iphone, a fully functioning recreation of everyone’s favorite under-performing game console. The app can play both TurboGrafx and PC-Engine games, as well as CD-based ROMs. Right now the software is only available to beta testers (and donation-makers), though it’s expected to hit wide release soon. Check the video after the break and see for yourself.

The iPhone patent: Steven P. Jobs, inventor

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/The_iPhone_patent_Steven_P_Jobs_inventor’; The US Patent and Trademark Office has revealed a mammoth document that can only be described as The iPhone Patent, a 371-page spectacular that covers Apple’s handheld multi-touch UI paradigm in excruciating detail. Many of the mocked-up screen shots depicted in the paperwork are dead ringers for screens that we’re well acquainted with in the production phone, while others represent ideas that either haven’t finished cooking or eventually found their way into the Cupertino circular file (follow the break for a picture of a home screen with dedicated “Blog” and dictionary apps, for instance). The application also mentions “modules” for video conferencing, GPS, and other currently non-existent (though widely expected) functionality. And in case there’s any doubt over who was responsible for this compendium of legalese, industrial design, and technical diagrams, one only need look at the header of page 1: “Jobs et al.” Yep, Steve himself wasn’t the least bit shy about taking credit atop an entire column of company A-listers for inventing the iPhone’s trademark user interface, which we’re guessing came about from a mix of equal parts truth, ego, and ass-kissing from the legal department down the hall. Seriously though, if you’re Scott Forstall down there at number two on the Inventors list, what are you going to do — go boardroom showdown all John Sculley-style?
